Guess who this is? Give up? Its the lady who wrote the 'Miss Read' books. 'Victoria magazine had a wonderful 2 page article on her in the April 2002 issue. Her name is Dora Saint. In 2002 she was in her eighties. I wish I could share this article with you. It is delightful. She grew up in London. She says that there was still a hint of Victorian times then. The muffin man still walked the winter streets with his wares balanced in a tray on his head and the lamp-lighter cycled from lamp post to lamp post as dusk fell. And all the women had skirts that swept the ground. She had a lot of maiden aunts who'd sweep me onto a lap and read to me-'Peter Rabbit' I remember. I'm quoting from the article of course. She married a school master, Douglas Saint and they had a daughter...."Bright fires in the fireplace, boiled eggs for the daily breakfast, a hand-crocheted edging to the tablecloth; The small details she writes of bring cheer at the thought....etc. If she is living yet, she has my applause and thanks. Who knows what may bless the heart and day of another? I think she has done that and more in her writings. Hope this hasn't been a bore, but if it has, you would have long since stopped reading . Hope your Saturday has been good to you and you to it. If you're still with me here, I'd love a comment! What are some of your favorite books? Posted by Picasa

Don't tell me, we both have old, dusty copies of Victoria??? I'll have to hunt out that issue. I have them all, except for about 3 that I gave away. (still slapping myself about that act!)

I love Miss Read too. Re-read them early this summer.

My favorite books are my knitting reference books.

OH! You mean books to sit and read? Anne McCaffery novels are high on my list, but I enjoy most fiction. I haven't read many lately, books tend to grab hold of me and I can't put them down until I'm done....so I have to choose wisely when I allow myself that pleasure.

Maggie Ann, I had to come looking for you. You said such nice things on my blog, Pieces, and your name didn't ring a bell. You have a wonderful blog, and I have bookmarked it for daily read ! Thank you !
And now I see that someone else shares my love of Miss Read's books? Marvelous! I own Chronicles of Fairacre and No Holly for Miss Quinn. I've read most of the rest I think, from the library.
And I also love to embroider, but quilting has become my passion. Embroidering, however, works well in the summer evenings when I don't want a whole quilt on my lap. So nice to find you..*VBS*
