Paper & Threads....

Paper dolls was my favorite past-time when I was a girl.  Did any little girls like to sew by hand?  I remember my Mom trying to get me to embroider pillow-cases as a teen.  No go!  I did enjoy Home Ec in high school.....knitting and sewing especially.  To make a new dress on a sewing machine...or a jumper....was interesting.

This movie is sooo good and the book 'Girl of the Limberlost' by Gene Stratton-Porter is a wonderful favorite.  A dear friend told me once that reading this book changed the way she looked at creation.. with awe.  And that somewhere she was visiting, they had a shelf of Gene Stratton-Porter books in the guest room, and she enjoyed each one she read. They became treasured friends to her....and to me.

I eventually finished this....an apron, but it is tucked away downstairs in my sewing room.  My Mother constantly had a project she was working on, and never went anywhere without her tote.  In it was the book she was reading at the time and her knitting or whatever.  She embroidered me a whole quilt top once.  Lavender and greens, a very pretty thing, but not as impressive as the fact she did all that stitching for me as a gift!  Loved that....

I like all things that are cheerful, and Woody certainly is a cheerful guy......'you've got a friend in me'  goes the song.  We like it all  =)

Psalm 28:7  The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.

Hello Maggie Ann :) Long time no visit. Well, paper dolls were a favorite pastime as a young girl .. you had to learn to be very careful cutting with scissors or tearing on dotted lines. My father gifted me with a child's chain stitch Singer sewing machine at about five years of age (He was a salesman for the company and could sew up a storm). That machine is still with me .. and got lots of use.

Enjoy your week. xx Mrs. Mac

I actually started cross stitching at ten, sewing at about 12 and crochet at 11.

I used to embroider a lot when I was little. I loved it. I made a lovely apron when I was about 10, the flowers were satin stitched chrysanthemums. Wonder what happened to it?
Also made lots of tray cloths & a couple of table cloths. Still did a lot when I got older my step grandmother couldn't sew so I used to embroider cushion covers for her. Loved cross stitch too. There was no telly when I was little but even when we got one there weren't that many programmes on it & only one channel for years.

I loved paper dolls. My friends and I would cut the Betsy McCall dolls from the McCalls magazine. I had a shoe box filled with them Hours of enjoyment from those little bits.

I love needlework so much, and am thoroughly entranced with the treasure your mother stitched for you! How wonderful! I am working on a baby quilt for a friend who is from Scotland. Well, not for her, but for her first grand-child. I am embroidering panels of Scottish fairy tales! It is great fun but a lot of work, and I need to have it finished by May! :-) I will post it on my piece-fulness blog when it's finished.

Wonderful post, Maggie Ann!
