The highlight of our zoo trip was getting to see the new baby Orangutan..Baby Bob with his Mommy, Chelsea.( the extra little set of hands on either side of Chelsea's head is the reflection of the children at the window) He is soooo adorable and Chelsea (once wakened) brought him right over to the window and gave him his bath and held him for all to wondor over and admire. Chelsea and her husband were sleeping like heaps of stone for a long while and somehow the zoo folk aroused them. It was worth a second walk back to see this. There are a lot of kind people in this world too. Many of us were looking out for the others, trying not to 'hog' the window so everyone could get up close and see this little miracle! The poster we were given says Orangutans don't give birth untill age 14 or 15 and that they have a single baby weighing about 3 1/2 pounds. They nurse the baby 3 or 4 years and carry it on thier back for the same amount of time. A female gives birth only every 6 to 8 years. I guess God didn't want them to be to numerous on the earth, but they are fascinating. Chelsea looked so maternal and pleased...and why not, Bob's a little doll = ).
